Eye Health & Lead Poisoning: Ghana’s Kohl Story

**Protecting the Eyes of Ghana's Future 🌟**

Kohl is a common household item in many African and Middle Eastern cultures. It's used as eye makeup to protect the eyes from the harsh desert sun. But did you know that some kohl products contain a toxic substance that can harm children's eye health? 🤯

In Ghana, lead poisoning from kohl has become a silent emergency. Many kohl products contain high levels of lead, which can cause irreversible damage to a child's eyes and brain. Children who play with kohl or apply it to their eyes are at risk of developing serious health problems.

Lead poisoning from kohl is a preventable tragedy. The good news is that UNICEF and our partners are working to create kohl products that are safe for children. We're also educating parents and caregivers about the dangers of lead poisoning and how to keep their children safe.

**What is lead poisoning? 🤱**

Lead poisoning occurs when a child ingests or breathes in lead dust or particles. These particles damage the nervous system and brain, causing developmental delays, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems. In severe cases, lead poisoning can even cause seizures, coma, or death.

In children, lead poisoning can cause:

* Eye damage, including cataracts, glaucoma, and vision loss
* Hearing loss
* Seizures
* Developmental delays and learning disabilities
* Behavioral problems, such as ADHD and aggression

**Why is kohl a problem in Ghana? 🤷‍♀️**

Ghana has one of the highest rates of child lead poisoning in the world. Many kohl products are imported from countries like China and India, where lead levels are not strictly regulated. Even though some Ghanaian manufacturers claim their products are lead-free, testing has shown that many still contain high levels of the toxic substance.
