“Beshbarmak is not infant food”

**The Delicious Truth About Beshbarmak: A Traditional Dish Making a Difference in Kyrgyzstan**

🇰🇬❤️

Imagine eating a warm, hearty bowl of noodles on a cold winter day. Sounds comforting, right? For many families in Kyrgyzstan, this is a familiar sight, but not just because of the taste – it's also because of the love and care that goes into making it. In this Central Asian country, a traditional noodle dish called Beshbarmak is more than just a meal; it's a symbol of community, culture, and hope.

Beshbarmak, which translates to "five fingers" in Kyrgyz, is a traditional dish made with horse meat and noodles. In most cases, it's not a baby food, as some might think, but a staple in the local cuisine. However, for families struggling with poverty, food is a constant worry. In Kyrgyzstan, one out of five children under the age of five is malnourished. Parents often have to make tough choices between food staples like Beshbarmak and other essential expenses.

The harsh reality is that about 1 in 5 children in Kyrgyzstan is stunted due to malnutrition. This is where organizations like UNICEF come in. They're working with local communities to change the way families grow, buy, and give food.

By empowering farmers to leap into the modern world through agricultural training and resources.

Together, UNICEF and local organizations are also working to help families get access to affordable nutritious foods like Beshbarmak. In a small village, Sary Chelek, families can now buy fresh food directly from local farmers at a lower cost.

People like Bakhtyga arrive home to their infants with tired faces, mile-long walks in the foot-hills to drop their children off at school is long. Thousands more are unable to go to school due to poverty.

With every bowl of Beshbarmak served, families know that 'you are not alone'. We believe in the strength and resilience of our communities in Kyrgyzstan. We believe in their ability to create real change, together.
