**Every Child Deserves a Happy and Hygienic Life**<\/p>\n
**Accessible and clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are basic human rights for all children and their families worldwide.** The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is working hard to make sure every child has access to safe water, a sanitary toilet, and proper hygiene practices.<\/p>\n
Did you know that about 2 billion people in the world still lack access to clean water and 6 out of 10 people in sub-Saharan Africa do not have a decent toilet? Without access to WASH, children often fall ill often, miss school, and are more likely to die from preventable diseases.<\/p>\n

Here are some heart-wrenching statistics: almost 1 in 9 children under the age of 15 die before reaching their 18th birthday because of a lack of access to WASH. Moreover, girls who do not have access to a decent toilet are up to 25% less likely to attend school.<\/p>\n
**The Journey to a WASH World**<\/p>\n
UNICEF is dedicated to bridging the WASH gap and is implementing new and innovative solutions to improve access to safe water and sanitation. In Ethiopia, the organization is working with the government to build a network of toilets in every school and at home. Similarly, in Bolivia, UNICEF is constructing water tanks to capture rainwater and filter ponds providing clean drinking water for the community.<\/p>\n
One of the most significant challenges in increasing WASH access is the effort to raise awareness on the importance of proper hygiene habits and practices. Successful programs like “Everybody Has a Right to Keep Clean” encourage children and families to follow proper hygiene practices, for instance, washing hands with soap and water.<\/p>\n
